Crime Prevention Division

The Wildwood Crest Police Department's Crime Prevention Division conducts a variety of functions to take a "proactive" approach to prevent criminal activity, rather than a "reactive" approach to respond to such activity.  The Division operates as a function of the regular Police department, and participates in many activities throughout the year.  Some of the activities and services provided are outline below:

WINTER PROPERTY CHECKS

Many residents of the community are away from their homes for periods of  time during the winter months.  The Wildwood Crest Police Department conducts "Winter Property Checks" of any property that will be unoccupied for any period of time.  The procedure for requesting such a check is for the resident to come into police headquarters, complete a short form with details on their time away, and turn it in to the Communications Officer.

The Patrol division then is made aware of the time the property will be vacant.  Patrols are increased in the area, and any sign of activity around the property is then investigated.  The Patrol division also makes a physical check and inspection of the exterior of the property once a week.  This enables the sides and rear of the property to be inspected for unusual signs of activity, such as wind damage, or broken pipes.

The information the resident provides when completing the request form also lists contact information, so that in the event of a problem, the designated persons may be contacted by the Police.

PROPERTY SECURITY INSPECTION

The Crime Prevention Division provides the service of home security inspections to any resident who would like to utilize the service.  This service is made by appointment, and entails an Officer coming to the residence, inspecting the exterior and interior, then making any recommendations as to changes that may be made to increase the security of the home.  The resident is able to discuss the recommendations with the Officer, and have any questions answered concerning the security of their home.  This service is also available to businesses in the community.  This service employs the technique of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, a proven method for reducing the likelihood of criminal activity taking place at a home or business.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

The Wildwood Crest Neighborhood watch is a civilian organization that operates in close cooperation with the Police Department.  The Neighborhood Watch meets four times annually.  The meetings provide a comfortable venue for residents to discuss current concerns, trends, activities and events.  Membership is always open, and the Wildwood Crest Police Department can be contacted for information on how to become involved.  This group provides a very important service to the community and they are always in need of new members.
